Tax Preparation Classes Are you having trouble doing your own taxes this year? Have you given up and gone to a tax accountant again this year? If you are frustrated with reading the publications or even the computer software and trying to understand exactly how to fill in all the blanks, calculate all the deductions and make sure you are using the correct worksheets, you may want to consider getting some outside help that will allow you to soar right through filing your tax returns the next time around. Although it may be a little late for this tax season, before the next tax season comes around, check with your local community college to see if they offer adult, non-credit tax preparation courses. If not here, you may check with a local community center for a similar non-credit course. Another great place to find these classes are through large tax preparation organizations like Jackson-Hewitt or H&R Block. Traditional tax preparation classes will take place with the use of a textbook and tax related materials. The instructor will be someone certified as a public accountant that can walk you through the steps of preparing your taxes. Since tax return filing is quickly turning from paper to e-filing, many of these courses are starting to use computer classrooms, rather than traditional classes with just a textbook. Of course, the computer-based classes will also use a textbook, so that the student can use this as a reference point in future tax seasons. If you cannot find a local office or college in your area that offers physical classes, do some research online to see if a community college or tax service can offer you distance learning, online courses. Many colleges and tax service businesses, like Jackson-Hewitt, now offer taxpayer online options for learning about filing tax returns at their own pace. The beauty of this type of program is that it allows you to learn from the comfort of your own home with the computer and tools you will likely be using to file your refund in the future. While tax preparation programs are primarily intended to assist individuals and couples with filing tax returns, these types of courses also help give taxpayers a leg up on the kinds of investments and income that will hurt or help your taxes and your tax returns. This is just an added bonus to the course. Another good asset to many of these tax preparation classes is that they are relatively inexpensive and some courses are even free, only requiring students to pay for books and supplies. If you are taking an online course, you may have to pay for downloading a software program as well. The online courses are almost always available year round, but you may have to wait until next summer or fall to enroll in a physical course. Most programs offered onsite only happen once a year, towards the end of a tax year, in order to prepare students for the upcoming tax season. If you want to try to cram in a tax preparation course before this tax season is over, most of the online courses are offered in a series of 2-3 eight hour classes that could be done in a matter of days. |
